Damasteel Patterns

The rolling or forging, either with a press or a hammer, of the billet moves the layers slightly. Two pieces with the same production route and pattern do not look exactly the same. There is always a slight difference. Deep grinding cuts or coining of the surface cuts through the layers give an even more interesting pattern (similar to the contours on a map). Twist, Heimskringla and Ladder are patterns especially suitable for hollow ground knife blades. Creating a knife by forging and grinding will produce very different effects from the same bar of steel. Forging compresses, stretches and moves the layers, whereas grinding will cut through the layers.
